Gran Turismo, a Sony PlayStation institution and arguably the greatest driving simulator of all time is making headlines once again.
With Gran Turismo 5 well established on the PlayStation 3 the world has wondered where to next for GT. Responding to questions at the recent China Joy gaming event the creator and spiritual leader of Gran Turismo, Kazunori Yamauchi, attempts to answer the worlds wonder. Along the way letting a few interesting morsels of information out of the bag, morsels relating to the various versions of GT.
Sony Entertainment Corp had a large presence at the gaming event, with the PS Vita stand a buzz with enthusiasts and journalists alike. Kazunori Yamauchi and Sony Entertainment executives gathered for a press Q&A session, answering questions from an enthusiastic audience, China loves gaming it appears.
When questioned on the status of GT6, Yamauchi said that he’s been working on the framework for the game since immediately after work on GT5 finished. He later added regarding GT6, “We’re always aiming for the latest technology and the latest expression.”
The mention of ‘latest technology’ by Yamauchi could easily infer GT6 will be a PlayStation 4 title, made even more plausible when you consider the PlayStation 4 is expected within a year, while GT6 development sounds very preliminary, a long way off.
On the possibility of a PlayStation Vita version of Gran Turismo, Yamauchi said, “If we were to make it, we’d like to make use of the ability to play anywhere and the ability to use 3G at any time.”
Sounds as if a PS Vita version may be a long way off as well, keep up hope, in many ways it is inevitable. Sony has ensured that GT is present on every platform.
As willing as Yamauchi is to answer questions, always in his relaxed and reserved way, he actually managed to say very little. Giving the impression that if Yamauchi wasn’t working for Sony, he would still be doing what as he does. Its easy to imagine he would be creating GT games even if only a handful of people played them.
Yamauchi was also asked about the possibility of MOD-like functionality in GT5, allowing players to freely make modifications. He responded, “If we can find a good balance, we’d like to increase the areas where users can make modifications.”
Local media were interested in Shanghai Circuit being represented in the GT series. Yamauchi said that he was scheduled to visit the circuit the following day (7/27) and would be considering what elements could be used in a game.
The development of GT5 continues it seems, Yamauchi is always thinking and usually receptive to good ideas and new content. Is there more paid content on the way for GT5?
The next generation console hardware rumors have now been joined by next generation game rumors. GT6 is obviously in the works, but as ever with GT, it is finished when its finished, this game won’t be rushed. Sony is going to need the big guns firing for the release of the PS4, Gran Turismo is one of Sony’s biggest guns.
