Rovio, mobile gaming success story and creator of Angry Birds have a new game waiting in the wings, more animal antics are coming our way from September 27th
The brand new game Bad Piggies is played from the Piggies side of the fence. Your job as King Pig is to construct the most bird-proof structures, machines and transports possible, aiming to withstand the onslaught of the self righteous angry birds, Bad Piggies is played with the opposite perspective you see.
Spreading it’s wings, while Angry Birds will be with us for many years to come Rovio knows it can’t keep all of its eggs in one basket. Diversifying is essential for long term survival, even in the world of bird tossing fun.
Bad Piggies
Bad Piggies is more TV series spin-off than brand new game, although Rovio have tried to be adventurous. Bad Piggies introduces a new style of puzzle solving gameplay along with some brand new characters. The in-game graphics continue Rovio’s excellent cartoon style graphics, bright, simple, colourful and very eye catching.
Many green pig characters are at the player’s disposal during the game, all under the King Pigs command with the sole purpose of protecting the King from the kamikaze bird onslaught. The king needs time to eat his bird egg omelettes you see. The cast of characters includes the second in command (2IC) Moustache Pig, the Helmet pigs and the worker pigs in three sizes, small, medium and large.
During the game your army of pig workers are donned with different hats and helmets to allow various skills to be used. Many contraptions and machines must be built to collect the eggs and get cooking. Hard hats, pumpkin hats, ghost sheets, winter gear, Santa hats, cowboy hats and sombreros will all be available throughout the games levels.
From the press release; “There’s a lot of empathy towards the lovable enemies from the Angry Birds games, and we’ve been constantly asked: what about the pigs’ side of the story?” said Mikael Hed, CEO of Rovio. “Bad Piggies gives you the chance to play as the second-most-loved characters in the Angry Birds universe, and explore this rich world through their green eyes.”
“We’ve had a lot of fun creating a totally new and unique gameplay experience,” said Petri Järvilehto, EVP Games at Rovio. “There’s so much more to these pigs than what is seen in the Angry Birds games, and Bad Piggies is the first glimpse into what’s going on in the imaginative and ingenious minds of the pigs.”
How much money is in Mobile Gaming?
Rovio Games in May announced its financial standings for the 2011 period. During 2011 Rovio turned over $106.3 million, with a very healthy profit of $67.6 million before tax. The Angry Birds game, including the latest incarnations, the hugely popular Seasons and Rio, have been downloaded 648 million times, with 200 million daily users , impressive numbers for such a simple idea. The company that was established in 2003 has recently been valued at over $8 billion USD, upper estimates of $9 billion have been made.
Conclusion
Angry Birds was a huge hit, versions have appeared for every platform, now including Facebook. Not forgetting the branded toys, playgrounds and now Angry Birds The Movie. Can the formula be re-applied, is it as simple as make-up on a pig?
Children have been known to love the characters even before they realize it’s also a video game, on this front Bad Piggies continues Rovio’s tradition of loveable characters, they have it in spades.
Bad Piggies will be priced at 99 cents when released on September 27, initially only iOS and Android will be available, the Windows 8 mobile and desktop versions will follow shortly after. Here at Highpants we suspect October 26.
Have Rovio struck gold a second time? Bad Piggies looks to have everything required to succeed but only time will tell. Rovio are one of the successes of mobile gaming, proving there is gold in them there hills.
