Sony VAIO laptops are once again making a fashion statement, and we like it. Reminiscent of seeing that new supermodel strut her stuff down the catwalk, yes the catwalk, the new E Series laptop is out there with a strut and plenty of attitude.

Being a 14 inch laptop the Sony has sturdy but slender proportions, measuring in at 245 x 22.4 x 341mm and staying just above the yellow line weighing in at 2.3kg (5.07 pounds) with the standard battery.

With luminous pinstripes and highlights the little details give the E Series it’s science fiction flare. The illumined keyboard reminds us what the E Series is here for, a keeper of our keystrokes, as a laptop Sony haven’t skimped on the fundamentals. The combination of fast Intel CPU with dual hybrid graphics provide enough speed for everyone from the casual gamer to video editors on the go.

Keeping your lap warm on those cold winters nights Sony has selected a trio of chips. The Intel Core i3-2350M (Sandy Bridge) processor, 4GB of DDR3 memory and the pixel pushing AMD Radeon HD 7670M graphics chip, incorporating 1GB of dedicated VRAM. Integrated into the chipset is the Intel 3000 graphics chip, in low power mode the E Series can drop back to the integrated chipset graphics chip saving power. Clever fashonista.

Keeping the chips company on the inside, the usual assortment of likely characters, 500GB 5400RPM hard drive, DVD ROM and the integrated 1.3-megapixel Exmor HD webcam, with gesture recognition. Able to interpret various hand gestures such as swipes and flicks to control applications. Gesture control of applications is currently limited to Windows Media Player, IE9, PowerPoint and PowerDVD. The internal speakers stereo speakers includes with Dolby^® Home for maximum audio quality.

Plugs are a plenty around the back with 4 USB, two USB 3 one of which is powered and two USB 2, along with HDMI, network and audio.

The display illuminating darkened rooms is a 35.5cm (14”) VAIO Display. The LED backed display runs at a resolution of 1366×768, all cleverly engineered into a 16:9 aspect ratio display. As with all Sony products expect the Sony Online Store to offer many customizations, CPU, Memory, Storage and did someone say 1080p HD IPS display?

The Sony E-Series is certainly a laptop dressed to impress, here at Highpants the black and orange striped laptop jumped out at us, the rubberized texture giving the black finish extra pop. Even more impressive is the fact that Sony hasn’t just slapped make-up on a pig. No instead this is a well spec’d gaming capable laptop that just happens to look good.
