After stunning the world by announcing the $25K price tag for its new top of the line TV, the monster sized 84 inch XBR-84X900, Sony has now soothed everyone’s pain by revealing the device will include 10 free 4k movies.
Sony have also revealed this week (November 29) that the new TV will be supplied with a loaner media device that will provide the free 4K content to the TV.
Sony had promised in November that they would provide native 4K content to the 4K monster TV, now that secret device has been revealed. The black box Ultra HD media player will be a hard drive based system that will be delivered pre-loaded with 10 movies, all in the glorious new 4K Ultra HD format.
An astoundingly simple marketing move to appease concerns over a lack of content the media player is on loan only, once Ultra HD players become available Sony will expect users to return the unit.
Sony has confirmed the content provided on the hard drive will include The Amazing Spiderman, Total Recall (2012), The Karate Kid (2010), Salt, Battle Los Angeles, The Other Guy, Bad Teacher, That’s My Boy, Taxi Driver and The Bridge on the River Kwai , along with a selection of 4K video shorts from Red Bull and others. The player will be remotely update-able by Sony, so as more content becomes available it will be possible to upload new media to the hard drive.
The XBR-84X900 is Sony’s new flagship television, all stops have been pulled to make this the ultimate in large screen technology. Driving the 4K monster is Sony’s latest X-Reality Processor chipset capable of both displaying native Ultra HD content as well as up-scaling HD content.
All top of the line TV’s need to be well connected. In this case a full assortment of connectors cover the rear including 4 HDMI, PC, composite, component, digital tuners , audio in / out, network and 2 USB connectors. WiFi is also present, allowing Sony tablets and smartphones to act as an intelligent remote control and remote screen.
The 84 inch edge-lit LCD (16:9) crams 3840 x 2160 pixels into its 84 inch frame. The panel is rated at 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio. Built in audio is provided by 4 x 12.5 speakers and an external speaker, providing the stated 50 watt 5.1 surround, optical audio out is also provided for external amplification.
As with all new TV’s 3D is supported, at 1080p HD resolution the passive 3D is said to be the best available, with the extra resolution used to boost clarity and allow the use of less head-ache inducing passive 3D that requires the cheaper shutter free glasses.
Sony have also turned 3D into possibly the most useful new feature in many years, SimulView allows two people wearing the 3D glasses to view two different images simultaneously. Allowing two players to view their view of the game in full screen instead of the now old hat split screen.
Sony will start selling the 84 inch 4K monster in December, hopefully after taking pre-orders since September a few very deep pockets should have signed up already. If Sony can get the TV on store shelves this will be the most advanced television on the market, while only early adaptors and corporations will be able to afford the TV we can all wonder, how good is the best?
